Twice a year, the Glens Falls Medical Mission creates a free-standing medical and dental clinic in Nueva Santa Rosa, a small town in rural Guatemala.
The clinic is about three hours from the capital in a medically underserved area of the country. Volunteers provide general medical and dental care for patients of all ages as well as fluoride treatments for children, eyeglasses, counseling, cancer screenings, and medical/surgical referrals. Patients travel from many small towns in the surrounding countryside, often waking before dawn to start their journey to the clinic. We see up to 450 patients each day and clinic hours can be long, about 10+ hours.
Each clinic team is comprised of between 30-40 members with a variety of backgrounds, skills, and Spanish-speaking abilities. We travel to the area in April and October. You do not need to have a medical background to join us
-- just flexibility, good humor, and the desire to be a part of something greater than yourself.
